History

On the verge of closure in 1975, hillclimbs at Wiscombe Park were rescued by the FIVE CLUBS listed above, and also by Woolbridge MC, by inaugurating two weekends of hillclimbing, to commence the following year, 1976.

The ‘FIVE CLUBS’ came about as, although several of the clubs had experience of running hillclimbs, their distances from Wiscombe, made it impossible for any of them to go it alone. So began one of the most successful multi-club event partnerships in UK motorsport. Unfortunately Haldon MC folded in 1996, but the four remaining clubs still perpetuate their involvement in the event title.

‘FIVE CLUBS Wiscombe’ started in 1976 as an ASWMC championship weekend, but the event’s reputation rose quickly to encompass the BARC hillclimb championship as well in 1977. The event reached its peak in 1979, when it first hosted rounds of the British and Leaders Hillclimb Championships. The association with the British Championship continued until 1997 when it was decided to dispense with one of the two rounds at Wiscombe. However Wiscombe remains one of the best hillclimb venues in the country.
